How these times and Moons are made

  • Our server calculates every Moon, phase time, moonrise and moonset, and sends the finished page. Your browser only keeps the clock digits ticking and keeps your saved cities on this device.
  • The city, month and date you choose are in the page address, so our server receives them; that is how it calculates. Your saved city references, device time-zone name and current offset are posted to our server, which computes the rows and stores nothing. The saved list and labels stay on this device; labels are never sent. This site never asks for your location.
  • Clock and Moon times follow our server’s time-zone rules. Your browser only ticks the clock instants the server supplies. The rules can be out of date where a government changed its clocks recently. For Winnipeg, Casablanca, Vancouver and Edmonton, the page checks every date it shows and warns when a time there may be an hour off.
  • “Tonight” runs from noon today to noon tomorrow in the chosen city, so at 1 am it still means the night in progress. The Moon’s shape and share lit are calculated for 9 pm.
  • Phase times use Jean Meeus’s method (Astronomical Algorithms, chapter 49), shown to the nearest minute. An automated check compares six 2026 phase times with the U.S. Naval Observatory’s published times and requires agreement within two minutes.
  • Moonrise and moonset are for the centre of the city shown, from rounded reference coordinates, and are good to a few minutes there. Elsewhere in the same time zone they can differ by an hour or more, so choose the city nearest you.
  • Tonight’s Moon and the date card are drawn from the share lit and the angle of the bright edge in that city’s sky at 9 pm. The month grid and the phase icons show the lit side as seen from that city’s hemisphere. Calculated, not a photo.
